How are the books arranged in Touro Libraries?
Answer
Books are grouped together by similar subject categories. They are assigned unique identifiers containing letters that correspond to the subject area, followed by a group of numbers . These alphanumeric identifiers, termed "call numbers", are put on tags that are affixed to the books. (For a more detailed explanation of call numbers at Touro Libraries, see this page.) The books are arranged on the shelves first according to the letters on the tags, followed by the numbers.
Most books will be located in the circulating collection, the area of the library with books that can be borrowed. A smaller number of reference books are maintained in their own section. They can be used in the library only; they are not available to borrow. Reserve books are maintained close to the circulation desk. They can be used only in the library for a three hours duration, and must be checked out on your library account.
